In this study, what Sadr al-Shar & imacr;`a (d. 747/1346) aimed to achieve with his ta`d & imacr;l attempt is examined historically in terms of the relationship between M & amacr;tur & imacr;dism and Ash`arism. This relationship concerns the transformation within Ash'arism itself. Ash'arism attained a systematic structure with al-B & amacr;qillan & imacr; (d. 403/1013) and Ibn F & umacr;rek (d. 406/1015). Afterward, through the transformations it underwent with al-Juwayn & imacr; (d. 478/1085), al-Ghaz & amacr;l & imacr; (d. 505/1111), and finally al-R & amacr;z & imacr; (d. 606/1210), its engagement with Peripatetic philosophy advanced to a more developed stage. In M & amacr;tur & imacr;dism, the process did not take place simultaneously with Ash`arism. In M & amacr;tur & imacr;dism, the references to its founding "im & amacr;m" coincide with about one and a half centuries after the "im & amacr;m's death". Taking this difference into account, this historical process is analyzed in terms of the relationship between the two schools, and the transformation of M & amacr;tur & imacr;dism is linked to Ash'arism through al-R & amacr;z & imacr;. With al-R & amacr;z & imacr;, a new language of kal & amacr;m emerged, prompting the Hanaf & imacr;s to adapt to this new discourse. One of the first and highest forms of this language within M & amacr;tur & imacr;dism, along with al-Samarqand & imacr; (d. 722/1322), was found in Sadr al-Shar & imacr;`a. From this point of view, the article builds on Sadr al-Shar & imacr;`a's activity, which I conceptualize as a ta`d & imacr;l attempt, on the relationship between these two schools historically and between religious and philosophical thought in general. It is argued that Sadr al-Shar & imacr;`ah's attempt represents the encounter of M & amacr;tur & imacr;dism with philosophical issues and language in the case of Avicenna.
