The aim of our study is to determine the distribution and the antimicrobial susceptibility of the causative agents isolated from urine cultures of the patients with symptomatic urinary tract infection. For the isolation and identification of bacteria, conventional biochemical procedures and automated techniques (API 20E, API 20NE, bioMerieux) were applied. The antibiotic susceptibilities were determined by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method as described in Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. The most frequently isolated microorganism from both hospitalized patients (49.5%) and outpatients (69.6%) was Escherichia coli. Amikacin was the most effective antibiotic for E. coli isolates in hospitalized patients. In these isolates the susceptibility of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole was 54.1% and ciprofloxacin was % 53.3. Among E. coli isolates from outpatients the susceptibilities to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole were lower than the susceptibilities to the other antibiotics. The low susceptibility rates of empirically used antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and TMP/SMX in E. coli strains are remarkable in recent years. In urinary tract infect infections, empirical treatment should be avoided without urine culture and antibiogram, and treatment should be changed according to the results of culture and antibiogram.
