In this study, to determine the radiological characters of spring waters used as drinking water in Zonguldak province a survey was carried out. Forty-nine different water samples collected from the water reservoirs were analyzed. To determine the radioactivity level of the water samples the gross alpha and beta activity concentrations were measured by using a gas flow proportional counter. The measured gross alpha and beta activity concentrations were found to be from 2.9 +/- 0.8 to 170.5 +/- 41.7 mBq L-1 for alphas and from 15.4 +/- 11.2 to 244.3 +/- 53.0 mBq L-1 for betas. All the measured gross alpha and beta activity concentrations are lower than the limit values recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
