Objectives: The aim of this study is to analyse the relation between EEG findings and etiological reasons, as well as prognosis in metabolic encephalopathies (ME).
Patients and Methods: One hundred and forty four patients (55.6% women, 44.4% men) with a mean age of 55.3 +/- 18.9 (14-85 years) were included in this study. EEG findings were classified in 7 stages according to intensity of alpha, theta and delta waves. If no activitiy was observed on EEG, then it was considered as cortical silence.
Results: Etiological causes were as follows: hypoxic ischemic encephalopaty (HIE) was determined in 34%, hyponatremia in 24.3%, diabetes mellitus (DM) in 10.4%, renal insufficiency in 10.4%, various endocrinopathies other than DM in 10.4%, hepatic insufficiency in 7.6% and hypernatremia in 2.8% of patients. Confusion was detected in 35.4%, lethargia in 16%, stupor in 12.5% and coma in 11.8% of the patients. EEG was normal in 13.2% of patients, cortical destruction was detected in 13.2%, and cortical silence in 4.2% of the patients. There was a significant relation between alterations in consciousness and etiological causes (p=0.001). Nevertheless, EEG findings were not correlated with etiological causes (p=0.117). On the other hand, as the impairment in consciousness deepened EEG findings got worse (p<0.0001). Furthermore, EEG stages correlated well with prognosis (p<0.000).
Conclusion: Our results showed that, EEG findings were nonspecific to the etiological causes in ME, but this test is a usefull, non-invasive tool for determining the clinical findings and prognosis of the patients.
